About The Conference
Purpose:
The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum for therapists, researchers, and community people to discuss the kinds of cultural interventions used as promising or best practices in the treatment of substance abuse in American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Latinos.
Conference Objectives:
(1) To discuss the problem of addiction in a cultural context.
(2) To share information about the use of different cultural interventions by American Indian/Alaska Native counselors and Latino counselors in the treatment of substance abuse in their respective populations.
(3) To discuss historical trauma as a factor in alcohol abuse and as a basis for using cultural interventions in the treatment of alcohol abuse/polysubstance abuse.
(4) To discuss gender issues in the treatment of alcohol abuse with specific emphasis on the use of cultural interventions.
(5) To analyze some of the policy implications (e.g., reimbursement issues) of using culturally based interventions in substance abuse treatment.
(6) To provide epidemiological information about current rates of alcohol abuse among American Indian and Hispanic populations.
