14th annual Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium

Dear Friends of Indigenous Languages:

The web site for the 14th annual Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium is now up and running at http://linguistlist.org/sils/ with a call for papers and information on the conference site.

Dr. Teresa McCarty at Arizona State University has also asked me to announce that the Journal of American Indian Education will have a special theme issue that will critically address the standards movement in particular, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 -- as these policies impact American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian education. The issue will coincide with congressional deliberations on the reauthorization of NCLB this fall. We view this as an opportunity to provide situated, "scientifically based"

evidence on these policies, and to advance a new discourse regarding federal education policy for the 21st century. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2007. We hope you will consider submitting a paper on this important topic. Please forward this to others who might be interested, and if you have any questions, contact information is on the attached and below. A "Call for Papers" is at http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~jar/JAIE-NCLB.htm

If you have a short anecdote about how the standards movement, NCLB, or Reading First are affecting your classroom or program and don’t want to write a full article, send your experiences to Jon.Reyhner@nau.edu
